Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2015 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase The final instalment of Jonathan Holt's Venice trilogy (known as the Carnivia Trilogy) is yet another triumph. A man is being inducted into the third degree of a very secret masonic lodge in Venice. Just at the moment when he thinks the ritual is about to be completed and he will become privy to every secret in the lodge, he feels his heart being pierced. His body is found, washed up on the shore. His tongue is beside his corpse. Kat Tapo, a Captain in the Carabinieri whom we know well from the first two novels, is given command of the investigation. Second Lieutenant Holly Boland of the U. S. Army, recovering at home in America from all that happened in the second novel (you must read it to find out what that was), is deeply affected by her father's incapacity following a stroke. She comes across a document written by him many years previously, when he was posted to Italy with the U. Army. It seems to suggest that the infamous "Gladio", a collection of Italian right wing extremists trained by NATO, continued to operate after it was officially closed down. It dawns on her that her father's stroke may have been deliberately caused by someone who didn't want that news to come out. She decides to return to Italy to investigate. Daniele Barbo, the extraordinarily talented young Venetian aristocrat who was the victim of a kidnapping plot in childhood, who came away from that with his ears and nose cut off, whom everyone has assumed to be autistic and who created Carnivia, a totally anonymous and, supposedly, hacker-proof website, has decided to hand his site over to its members, to give up his control of it. But then he notices something strange happening to the site. Could it have been hacked? A young Libyan computer hacker is planning an atrocity on an even greater scale than 9/11. What is it? Why is he doing it? Who are his paymasters? Is Ian Gilroy, the veteran CIA agent who was a great friend of Holly's father and who is also Daniele's guardian, being entirely honest about the part he may or may not have played in various events in Italy over the years? Has he given up whatever he has been doing? All these questions need to be answered. And they are. What is more, all seem to be connected. Holt has definitely not lost his touch. It is quite impossible to turn away from this gripping thriller, to do anything else but read it. It just has to be finished. But it is not just the plot. Indeed, that, it has to be said, is rather far-fetched (though it will be attractive to conspiracy theorists). No, the joy of this book, as with the others (at least for me) is in the glorious descriptions of Italy (particularly Venice) and Italian life. Above all, I adore the descriptions of the food. And that food, I hasten to say, is not pizza and spaghetti bolognese. The account of Kat's preparation of eel su l'ara left me salivating, longing to eat the wonderful dish. But, I am pleased to report, that is far from being the only magnificent meal eaten in this novel. I wonder what Holt will turn to next. Whatever it is, I am sure it will be splendid. Charles Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 September 2015 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase All I can say is what a read. The Traitor is book 3 in the Carnivia trilogy and whilst it may stand alone (I'm not sure) I think any reader would be better reading the novels in order to fully understand the very complicated, multi stranded plot. To summarise: Kat, a Carabiniere, is called to investigate the murder of an unknown man found on a beach in circumstances which suggest Masonic connections, Holly, her friend and U. Army officer, suspects her father was deliberately given a stroke to prevent him exposing something and Daniele gives up Carnivia only to find someone has planted a worm in the program and is controlling thousands of home computers. These plot lines eventually merge into one large plot and cover up. In other words business as usual in Italy. This is not a novel to be dipping in and out of as the plot is complicated and you need your wits about you to keep up. It is also quite technical as a fair amount of the action revolves around the Internet, hackers and computer programming - I got lost in the finer detail but the general idea is well explained and easy to follow. It also has plenty to say about the U. Government's past and present intelligence gathering and it is not a pretty picture. Whether it is true or not I don't know but I suspect a fair amount of it probably is, given recent revelations about their conduct. Some reviewers have suggested that this novel is a conspiracy theory too far and, in some respects, it probably is but the scenario of terrorists or hackers hijacking the control of machinery to create chaos seems all too plausible to me. I think The Traitor is an intelligent read and don't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who wants a page turner which provides food for thought. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 August 2015 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Best of the three - I disagree with the other reviewers. This was the best of the the kindle version is very reasonably priced. The author has had more time to develop the main characters and the central plot is more believable. It would be a shame if this were the last one we will see in this setting. It would be interesting to know a bit more about the author. Does he believe that history is a series of conspiracies and cover-ups or is it more a matter of chance? He shows a good understanding of Italian life and politics. Does he also have some inside knowledge of United States bases? I wouldn’t know if his picture of these is accurate or not. This book also had more about cooking than his other books and I am tempted to try some of the recipes. I give it four stars, not because it is not very good but because, as far as crime novels set in Italy go, it doesn’t come close to those of Camilleri. It would be nice if the next in the series (if there will be one) had a bit more humour in it. All the very best crime novels do.. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 September 2015 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase 'The Traitor' is sadly, the final instalment in Jonathan Holt's superb 'Carnivia' trilogy. It features the same principal characters as the previous two instalments - Second Lieutenant Holly Boland of US army intelligence, Captain Kat Tapo of the Venice Carabinieri, Ian Gilroy, the retired local CIA chief and Daniele Barbo, the recluse computer genius. Its plot is also based on some of the familiar ingredients of the first two books, namely the murky links between the Freemasons, the Vatican and the CIA, with enough historical fact built into it to make it seem frighteningly believable. This is a terrific book - possibly the best of the trilogy. It is well written and exciting - the pace never slackens, right up to its thrilling and dramatic conclusion. I thoroughly recommend the 'Carnivia' trilogy to anyone who enjoys high class thrillers and sincerely hope that we don't have too long to wait before Mr Holt's next work of fiction. Top international reviews 5. 0 out of 5 stars Conspiracy Theories Paradise Reviewed in Australia on 18 December 2015 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase All that is missing is a grassy knoll. What starts out as a murder mystery evolves into a terrorist plot. A plot to blow up Venice? Who is behind it? The usual suspects, of course. This book even puts me in mind of Live free, Die hard. There is more than a drop of cyber terrorism here. There is even a count down and a race to save lives. Sending feedback... Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Reviewed in Australia on 28 August 2015 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Took a while to get into the first book, but I persevered and am I glad I did? You bet! It's a terrific series. Great read. The weaving of Italian history and the machinations of the Catholic church into the plot was very informative. When the American forces are thrown into the mix, it becomes compulsive reading. It took a week to read the first half of book one and two days to read the rest of book one and book two and three. Can't wait for more from this author. Five Stars Reviewed in Australia on 4 June 2015 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase enjoyed reading The Traitor. It's similar to Steig Larson's trilogy except it's in Venice. 2. 0 out of 5 stars Two Stars Reviewed in the United States on 8 November 2015 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase I was expecting more after reading the first two books. Watch,O,full,Full,Movie,Online O Traidor movie download kickass. How O Traidor. No parla italiano, and that gave me some problems following the narrative, due to a very bad english CC's, that mustve been issued by an overeager middle schooled italian or siscilian. and that is a major drawback for the film. br> which is very good indeed, about the big trials towards the leadership of the cosa nostra divisions of siscily in the late 70's and the 1980's. i do remember some of the names, and especially the bomb attack on giorgio falcone made a deep impression to me when it happened. it also shows the primitive judicial system that were excecuted in italian court rooms, with poor discipline and frightened judges and officials and corrupt police.
the story do spring back and forth very fast and often, but survives by good time and place info on each shift. the pace are slow, but the acting are very well done and the lead male actor gave an excellent performance on many levels. i wish i had those cool demeanors. br> if you want to see a film with some similarities to don corleone, and killing spree of blood feuds alla sciciliano style, then the grumpy old man recommend il traditore. a strong 8.
